LASIK
LASIK or Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis
offers a number of benefits over other
forms of laser vision correction because
it is performed under a protective layer
of corneal tissue. As a result, there
is less surface area to heal, less risk
of scarring, less risk of corneal haze,
less postoperative need for medications,
and vision returns more rapidly, often
within a day or so. LASIK can also treat
a higher range of vision errors. Although
postoperative results vary, most patients
are able to pass a drivers' license
test without their glasses or contact
lenses.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR LASIK?
Most people who wear glasses or contacts
are candidates for laser vision correction.
LASIK candidates should have stable
vision for at least one year; this means
your prescription has not changed very
much during the previous year. LASIK
corrects the vision of people who are
near-sighted, far-sighted, and have
astigmatism. Patients must also meet
basic medical and visual health criteria.
Age should not be factor when considering
LASIK. I have successfully performed
LASIK on people between the ages of
nineteen and sixty-eight! Laser vision
correction is not recommended while
pregnant, nursing, or taking certain
medications.
LASIK is right for you if you are motivated
to make a change in your life, and you
have realistic expectations of and understand
what LASIK can do for you. At your consultation,
I will personally determine your candidacy.
I will discuss with you whether your
prognosis is optimal for the LASIK procedure.
Hopefully you will be a great candidate
and be able to opt for the best choice
of your life - IMPROVED NATURAL VISION!

BENEFITS OF LASIK
The greatest benefit of LASIK is permanent
visual correction. For most people this
means a life free of glasses and contacts!
The LASIK procedure is virtually painless.
LASIK is convenient because both eyes
can be corrected at the same time and
you are at the Laser Center for less
than 2 hours! Most patients return to
work the following day. If you wear
contact lenses, imagine not having to
put them in every morning or clean them
every night! You will save money with
LASIK when you consider how much you
currently spend on glasses, contact
lenses and solutions. This procedure
can relieve chronic allergies or irritation
from contact lenses.
Visual recovery is rapid; within the
first 24 hours, you have a great majority
of your new improved vision. Most all
of my patients can drive the next day
without the need for glasses or contacts.

ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
After your eye has been completely
numbed using "eye drop" anesthesia,
an eyelid holder will be placed between
your eyelids to prevent you from blinking.
Next, an instrument known as a microkeratome
makes a protective flap in the cornea.
During this process you may feel a little
pressure, but no discomfort. You will
be asked to look directly at a target
light while the laser reshapes the cornea,
usually in less than a minute. Then,
the protective flap is folded back in
place where it bonds securely without
the need for stitches. After LASIK,
some patients report a slight discomfort
that usually goes away within twelve
to twenty-four hours.
